Amanda Knox is Free... and very, very lucky!

You can read my previous post about Amanda Knox by using the search on the left hand side.

While I do not think she directly murdered the victim, it was clear she knew more than she was telling.  This was a classic case where one attempt to obscure what she did know about the murder, made her guilty by association- and snowballed into a nightmare.  She is very lucky that there were mistakes made by the police, and they were allowed to surface.

Interrogations in countries even as civilized as Italy, are more like the back room interrogations that are portrayed in movies from the first part of the 19th century.

This should be a warning to all those who travel and study abroad; while it is statistically unlikely you will be involved in something so felonious, it is important to realize each and every country has a different style of laws and justice.  There are young people who are sentenced to years in foreign prisons for what would be considered small drug offences here in the United States.  It is important to note, there is also a different standard of "fairness" for foreigners who are charged with crimes in other countries, you are unlikely to receive any breaks.◦

I've read a lot about this case in the last week are so. I don't think you can say she knew more than she was telling, I think you have to say she didn't know what she knew anymore. She was interrogated 43+ hours, and the last 8 were overnight. The police had fresh interrogators switch off every 1-2 hours. She may not have been beaten but she was physically handled ruffly (Patrick Lumumba and someone else gave very similar accounts about their police treatment). Psychologically wise it was torture. It's happened before in the US in the Ryan Ferguson trail. If you look at the trail testimony from Chuck Erickson he's being completely honest, meaning he really believes what he's saying is true. But if you look at the 1:40 mark of the video I'm about to post you'll see that Chuck has no idea how the victim was strangled. Not till the police tell him. After the police where through with him he truly believed he and Ryan used the victim's own belt to strangle him. It's not a stretch to say something similar happened with Amanda. Anyway here's the video I'm talking about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCyKnc1BVV8

Also I think it's more fair to say she is lucky the mistakes made by police were uncovered. If the police didn't make any mistakes then it's quite possible there wouldn't have been any physical evidence to convict here.
