Covering Our Mouth When Laughing

Thinkstock Single Image Set

This is most often done subconsciously when we are laughing at something we feel we should not being laughing at, like another person. We are attempting to suppress the laugh or socially trying to not make the other person feel any worse.

In past eras it was considered rude for a women to laugh in public, so it was often seen with embarrassment.◦

Yes, women tend to do this more often then men. Women also do another similar gesture in which they cover their nose when they laugh. It's a slightly different hand position, and I don't know exactly what it means, but I see it often.

Some people are embarrassed of their teeth and if their mouth is open when smiling or laughing, they will cover it out of self-consciousness.
