Not a Good Week for Basketball Coaches
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski (top) and assistant Chris Collins react to the Blue Devils' loss of intensity midway through the second half of play against Long Beach State in Durham, North Carolina, on Tuesday, December 29, 2009.
Here we see pacifying behavior by both coaches; the interesting thing here is the assistant coach who is going well beyond eye blocking... this is more than eye blocking it is totally escapism which we see whenever someone is feeling intense discomfort. I often see this when people first hear extremely hard news to take, such as a death in the family...◦

Whenever we see a positive gesture out of context of the situation, and the person has turned it into a negative we are looking at a person under a great deal of stress or internal turmoil, as is the case here. Sometimes it is done to appear more confident than we really are, other times is subconsciously done to give strength.

Renee Zellweger Shows Subtle Disgust
A cheery Renee Zellweger made her way to a Santa Monica, CA restaurant on December 26, 2009 with a present in hand. Perhaps the actress was meeting a friend for a post Christmas celebration! After Renee’s Lunch date she waved goodbye.
See how the upper lip is moving upward, and the nose is also moving up just the slightest bit upward.

2009 Worst Liars Involved in a Crime
Ronald and Misty Cummings
Ronald was the natural Father to Haleigh Cummings who is missing. Misty was the live in girlfriend (at the time, they later married), it was reported that she left the mobile home that evening to attend a party. Ronald was at work at the time. They both have failed tests, faked emotions, used the wrong verb tense when speaking about Haleigh, and exhibited hot spots in interviews. If all these problem areas are due to lying about attending a party instead of being in the home that evening, then shame on both of you Misty and Ron... there is a girl missing and the most important thing is to get the girl back and not concealing that you were not responsible enough to care for a child.
Even though they have not been charged with a crime- at this time- they definitely lied and concealed facts that were important to the case. It is not just me stating this, every expert from truth wizards to former FBI profilers have agreed from the beginning that there is more to the story than these two have said.

Raw Video: Pope Knocked Down at Christmas Mass
A woman jumped the barriers in St. Peter's Basilica and knocked down Pope Benedict XVI as he walked down the main aisle to begin Christmas Eve Mass on Thursday.
The Pope's security gets a B-; thankfully she did not have a weapon or deadly intent. The actions of the security person that tackled the women was the highlight of the security detail, he moved without hesitation. They should learn from this that they need be more forward.
Unfortunately we do not have pictures or video from the other angle, it would be nice to see her face to see if it showed some of her intent.
From the current angle we do see some of her intent, she is leaning forward, hands on the barrier like a cat ready to jump.
I'm not clear on the details of the barrier jumper, Susanna Maiolo, there are some reports that she had been involved in another previous incident. I do not know if this is true, but if it is, then the grade for the security goes down.
A Vatican spokesman said the girl was "apparently unbalanced," but they would be "very lenient" with her and she would be pardoned. This is a mistake. I can list well over a dozen "stars" that have unbalanced people intruding in their lives, of which at least two unbalanced people would do harm to them if they had a chance. Any sign of aggression cannot be ignored.
There seems to be an increase in stalking and attacks on those in the public eye- to those who provide security- be on alert. The publicity seems to encourage others into action.◦

Prayer and Religious Gestures
There are gestures specific to every religion. Naturally we bow our heads and sometimes even kneel for prayer. When we look downwards we are saying that we are not worthy of His love and/or we may be at our lowest.
Gestures in religion also serve the purpose of creating community and unity; and to do them as a group shows respect for the church, God, and the religion.
Now when we see the 'illustrator' gesture of placing the palms together in a prayer like the above gesture in the picture, in non religious setting, it is saying, I am pleading my case. It is open to debate if you are pleading your case to the listener or to God himself.◦

Here we see two powerful people, who are both happy, with the confident and often times negative finger pointing gesture.
While it is still perceived as negative what is important is how neither wants to be perceived as weaker, so they match each others gesture.
In this case whomever holds it higher wins. Based on the picture it would be likely Amir Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jabir al-Sabah of Kuwait was first to make the gesture and Turkey's President Abdullah Gul followed suit.
In a way it is gesture gamesmanship, and in politics it is important to master- especially in the Middle East.

Faked Smile or Contempt?
Whenever we show an expression and it is not 'even' on both sides of the face, it is a faked expression.
Many might take this as contempt, but with us being able to see her teeth it could also be a practiced social smile that she is attempting to fake. Her face shows little or no other negativity... whereas when we normally see contempt we see anything from neutral or negative faces in conjunction with the unilateral lifting of one side of the mouth.
This is a classic case of needing to see video, compared to a picture. We'd need to see expressions before and after this one to see if we could see clusters of gestures and facial expressions that would make things clearer to us.
On aside, look at her free hand and what finger is backed away from the others...
here is another snap from the same day, once again it is hard to tell...

Good Fear
A girl enjoys a sled ride in Washington after a major snow storm hit the northeastern United States, December 20, 2009.
Fear is always a good thing, it is what causes it that can be bad.
Fear is our bodies natural reaction to external threats, the body automatically places us on alert. Our eyes widen to take as much in as possible. Our muscles tighten to brace for possible attack. Chemicals in our body are released, including adrenaline, to help us react.
Then it all can change...

U.S. President Barack Obama (R) meets with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao during a bilateral at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, on December 18, 2009
This pictures is one of those 1,000 words pictures. We see Obama leaning way forward while Jiabao is leaning back.
It has caused many political bloggers and news commentators to offer criticism, in the same way when he bowed to the Japan's leader Wen last month. Many people are quick to state that the President and even the United States- as a superpower is above this type of gesture... and it shows submissiveness...
This picture is different than his bow to Wen- that was a greeting bow and in my opinion is a sign of respect.
Part of the problem is- as we've become more casual in every part of our lives, we've also became a global community where travel and different cultures have never been more intermixed- these gestures can come under criticism.
In the next twenty years our gestures will never be more consistent across borders and seas... We are just going through a transition period where we cannot rely on Ms. Manners guide to state what is currently acceptable behavior/gestures.◦

Russell is not a millionaire and did not make 1.7 million last year, it is part of his strategy so they will take him to the final two. He developed this strategy before even arriving on the island and used it to help determine trustability among those he told this little lie to- which was everyone he had worked a deal with, the producers kept those conversations to themselves. Obama, The Party is Over
U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama depart the White House en route to Andrews Air Force Base on December 9, 2009 in Washington. The President and First Lady are traveling to Oslo, Norway to attend the Nobel Prize ceremony.
Someone asked me about Obama's pursed lips in the comments section of a previous post; and I had noticed in the last week he can be seen with pursed lips more and more often. I see it in candid shots in the Presidential limousine, when accepting the Nobel Peace Prize, when being interviewed on Sixty Minutes.
U.S. President Barack Obama speaks before signing a Presidential memorandum which moves about $600 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money to spur construction and renovation projects at 85 community health centers around the U.S. during a ceremony in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building adjacent to the White House in Washington on December 9, 2009.
What does this all mean? Well they say when you are the President of the United States you will age drastically in the White House as a result of the stress and enormity of the responsibility and Obama is now understanding that in the last two weeks. Afghanistan and health care (and probably a few other things we are unaware of) are all taking their toll... His usual athletic stride and easy going style are replaced by a more reserved walk. He still flashes his trademark big smile, but not as often; and he is more likely to offer a social smile to the crowd.
Pursed lips are often done unconsciously. It is a sign that he is carefully considering his words and is now more comfortable listening than speaking. It is a sign of some anxiety that he is feeling internally. He always has occasionally pursed his lips, and it is a part of his baseline, the difference is he is doing it more often in the last couple of weeks.◦

Even though there are hundreds of photographers attempting to take pictures of the two stars, it is not an excuse for two professional actors to not work together to present a unified picture.
They are not paying attention to each other are independently focusing their attention in different directions. Think back to some of the biggest couples being photographed by far more photographers and how their focus is much more consistent and their eye and head movements are matching.
I see pictures from almost every movie premiere and the red carpet for award shows photos and I have never seen two people more out of sync... something is up...◦

Subtle Expression Recognition Training Review of Humintell’s SubX Professional
I have great news for those of us who study facial expressions in real life scenarios.
Here is what is said on the Humintell’s website, “Recent research suggests that learning subtle expressions may be especially important for people who want to get better at detecting deception.
“Learning to be able to identify subtle expressions and microexpressions could improve your ability to detect deception beyond what you might be able to do by chance – to an accuracy rate of 70% or more.”
Subtle Expressions occur when an emotion is first beginning. They also occur when someone is trying to suppress any sign of how they are feeling.
I used the old SETT program that was available via CD-ROM and I was good at detecting subtle expressions, but it wasn’t until doing the online training with the SubX Professional that something just clicked and I can more easily detect subtle expressions in everyday life.
The key is in the delicate differences of subtle expressions from each of the core emotions and their expressions. There are several distinct ways a person could show subtle sadness and it always doesn’t equal just a half version of the full micro expression of sadness.
Every couple of minutes I am rewarded with even clearer understanding of people’s feelings thereby understanding them more- and this is with years of subtle expression training under my belt. It is a testament to how well the training works and translates to the real world.
I have personally spent over 3 ½ hours using the training program in the last month or so and just recently went from being certified as ‘proficient’ to an ‘expert’ (on the fastest speed) and the founder of the company Dr. David Matsumoto, said on Twitter even he can’t get 100%.
As Paul Hogan said in Crocodile Dundee, “...now that’s a knife.”
I can now say, “Now that is a training tool!”

Aggressive Anger!!!
The beady eyes, brows coming together, mouth closed, head tilted forward is aggressive anger.
If I saw this facial expression in public, I'd be put on immediate alert. If I were in the Secret Service I would react by alerting fellow agents, and she at the very least would be spoken with (to see if she was a threat to the protectee) and possibly taken off site for an in-depth interview. If I start to see tightness in the mouth I would know things were not going good and violence might be possible, and there would be little time to react because she is waiting for an opportunity to turn violent.◦

Disgraced ex-NBA referee Tim Donaghy, Did He Lie on 60 Minutes?
I am only including PART TWO, to see part one please use the link provided below the video.
Watch CBS News Videos Online
Tim Donaghy's bets on NBA games were hugely successfully, but it all came unraveled when he says the mob wanted a piece of the action. And that put him on the FBI's radar. Bob Simon reports.
Did He Lie?
I did see a hot spot, which can be a sign of a deceit. He has come clean, and this is what I saw.
He shows no deception when he states that he didn't call the games so he would win his placed bets...
He is also showing no deception when discussing the NBA and the conduct of the refs...
The only place I became suspious and suspect deception is when he was speaking about the ties to the mafia. He spoke freely throughout the interview, but when being asked questions about the mob, and what was said in the car, things change- he pauses more often and the words do not flow freely.
These verbal “blunders” are called disfluencies. Disfluencies include pause fillers, repeated words, mid-sentence corrections, prolonged vowels and syllables, and silent pauses and often are a sign of deceit. Nervousness and stress can cause them, so can having to think harder to keep stories straight, in everyday conversation they are simply fillers, but any change (more or less) can be a hot spot. Less of them can be a sign of a rehearsed story...
In the video, it would be easy to say this could be a sign of nervousness because they are the mob- I mean they do murder people and do other things that are not pleasant- and I would normally agree with you, except... continue watching the show and you will see more pacifying behaviors when speaking about the NBA than when speaking about the mob; this is a sign he is more uncomfortable with his relationship with the NBA than the Mob.
So what did I see and what does it mean? He is using the stereotype of the mob's violent nature to help explain why he did this, and probably had a more amicable relationship than is implied in the interview.
With all that being said, he is a generally honest guy that has done his time for the crime, has come clean about past wrongs and was one of the most honest people I have seen on 60 minutes in years...◦

Onto lie detecting. Notice he doesn't answer the questions, the reporter is putting answers/words in his mouth. Notice the disgust shown on his upper lip.◦

Geisha Subtle Fear
Fear and Surprise are often confused. This is fear because we see way too much of the white in her eyes, we always show more in fear compared to surprise. We can also see fear in her forehead and how her eyebrows are coming closer to each other.
For what it is worth, this picture was staged and had we seen this in a video instead of a picture, we would have noticed the "staged" emotion because she is doing what I call fishing for an emotion. Many people do not know how to fake a true emotional facial expression so they end up giving us a couple of different emotions; those of us trained to detect facial expressions see this as tripping over their emotions- in a couple of seconds they show us a couple of emotions, lasting a beat too long, and not matching in either their eyes and mouth. If you were a detective, and untrained in facial expressions, you'd see whatever you'd thought (your perception) you saw but in reality you only saw 1/3 or 1/2 of it...and move on unrecognizing it as a hot spot.◦

Who Is Into Who?
Heidi Montag and her husband Spencer Pratt show off their love for each other as well as for the paparazzi at the Borders Books & Music store in New York City, New York on November 16, 2009 for their new book launch. The two talk about their newest book “How To Be Famous” and their love for being tailed by the photographers.
We lean towards things we like, she is leaning towards him, but he is leaning away from her.
Another thing to look for is the direction of the feet, we point them in the direction we'd like to travel- hers pointing to him, while his is not as clear.
Also notice how he is hiding his thumbs- low confidence.
While he may be a good writer, it appears he doesn't use his body language to his advantage, and it is not matching his message.
On an aside, I may be living in the middle of the heartland, but I never heard of them or know what made them famous...◦

2009 Most Discussed Body Language in Politics
Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor appears before the Senate Judiciary Committee during the fourth day of her confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington on July 16, 2009.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor will have a lasting impression and leave her mark in the coming years and decades as she rules on cases that the US Supreme Court hears- yada, yada...
What is interesting and why she receives this award is she introduced "blink rate" to masses as almost every news program discussed her blink rate as she was answering certain questions during her confirmation hearing. Up to this point blink rate was only know to a few select group of researchers, body language experts, and poker players.
If you see a person start to blink at a faster rate you are seeing a person who is under pressure, may be lying, or feeling some sort of anxiety.◦

The Skeptic's Eyebrow
Notice the eyes, staring and somewhat squinting.
Notice the eyebrows, one is higher that than the other.
Someone has said something to him, and now he is reacting and his facial expression conveys that he is questioning and doubting what you are saying to him.
With him pulling his shirt away from his body, it is likely someone has said something like, "boy you smell..."◦
