Tragic School Shooting: "He had no emotion on his face, he was just shooting"

"He had no emotion on his face, he was just shooting," a Chardon student told WKYC.

Travis Carver, another student present in the cafeteria at the time said the expression on T.J. Lane's face was "straight determination."

How did the shooter get to this point?
How much of this is personality?  Was he a sociopath?

These are the type of questions we (and the media) will be asking ourselves in the coming months and days.

Some of the things we are hearing from students and people who knew him are:

"...quiet loner who may have been bullied..."

"...He pretty much sticks to himself but does have some friends and has never been in trouble over anything that we know about."

"...17-year-old quiet and sweet, although others said he had a temper..."

"He would never really talk about his family"

"But you can always tell he had a very sad look in his eyes all the time. He usually just kept to himself."

"He never really stood up for himself very much..."

The mother of a student in Chardon, who asked not to be identified, said her son knew the accused gunman.
"My son's reaction was 'this doesn't surprise me.' T.J. (Lane) was a nice sweet kid who was misunderstood and he probably cracked from being different," she said.

Those of you that have followed the blog for a while can read between the lines of the above statements. Was he teased or bullied?  Who are the "others" who said he had a temper?  Why would he need to stand up for himself?  There is something going on below the surface.

Other items that are of interest in understanding the shooter:

The shooter listed "primitive hunting" among his interests on his now deleted Facebook page, the newspaper reported.

Court records showed that the suspect's father, Thomas Lane Jr., had been arrested several times for abusing women he had children with.

In rare situations, students who are isolated from their peers, and lose interest in activities they used to like doing, can sometimes become violent. NBC's Chris Jansing reports.

Angry and Dangerous

a caucasian preteen girl with long brown hair is scowling as she tips her chin down and yells angrily

Intensity in the eyes, baring of teeth, and tilting of the head signals impending danger. It is obvious there is anger, but the tilting of the head is the key signal to a individual getting ready to strike.

When a person tilts their forehead forward it is for one reason: to protect the more sensitive parts of the face in a physical confrontation.

You will see boxers and wrestlers do this... protecting the jaw.◦

Daniel Jackson Dangerous Intent Facial Expression

AFL Rd 4 - Tigers v Demons

Daniel Jackson of the Tigers remonstrates with Jordie McKenzie of the Demons after he clashed with Ben Nason of the Tigers during the round four AFL match between the Richmond Tigers and the Melbourne Demons at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on April 18, 2010 in Melbourne, Australia.

Even though the violence has already began, rest assured this is the same expression he had on his face immediately prior to the confrontation. See the intensity in the eyes, nature like exposing of the teeth, forward leaning head, all sign to be on the lookout for when evaluating if a person is ready to strike out.◦

Dangerous Intent

AFL Rd 2 - Saints v Kangaroos

Brent Harvey of the Kangaroos wrestles with Jarryn Geary of the Saints during the round two AFL match between the St Kilda Saints and the North Melbourne Kangaroos at Etihad Stadium on April 3, 2010 in Melbourne, Australia.

See the anger and intensity in the eyes, see the titled forward head, and see the lips pulled back exposing the teeth.◦

Raw Video: Pope Knocked Down at Christmas Mass

A woman jumped the barriers in St. Peter's Basilica and knocked down Pope Benedict XVI as he walked down the main aisle to begin Christmas Eve Mass on Thursday.

The Pope's security gets a B-; thankfully she did not have a weapon or deadly intent. The actions of the security person that tackled the women was the highlight of the security detail, he moved without hesitation. They should learn from this that they need be more forward.

Unfortunately we do not have pictures or video from the other angle, it would be nice to see her face to see if it showed some of her intent.

From the current angle we do see some of her intent, she is leaning forward, hands on the barrier like a cat ready to jump.

I'm not clear on the details of the barrier jumper, Susanna Maiolo, there are some reports that she had been involved in another previous incident. I do not know if this is true, but if it is, then the grade for the security goes down.

A Vatican spokesman said the girl was "apparently unbalanced," but they would be "very lenient" with her and she would be pardoned. This is a mistake. I can list well over a dozen "stars" that have unbalanced people intruding in their lives, of which at least two unbalanced people would do harm to them if they had a chance. Any sign of aggression cannot be ignored.

There seems to be an increase in stalking and attacks on those in the public eye- to those who provide security- be on alert. The publicity seems to encourage others into action.◦

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is set to leave hospital on Wednesday following a bloody attack that left him with several facial injuries

Quite hard to watch...

I write often about dangerous people and how they look, so those who work in the security fields can pick out possible threats.

This individual was definitely giving off a bad vibe and should have been seen by his security before he was attacked.

Take a look at his facial expression right after the attack, some of the dangerous signals are still present. Be careful, he is not showing fear; he is still showing anger and intensity. Disgust is also present. Given the strength of his anger they have to be thankful he did not have the opportunity to do more harm.◦

Aggressive Anger!!!

Woman'S Head And Shoulders

The beady eyes, brows coming together, mouth closed, head tilted forward is aggressive anger.

If I saw this facial expression in public, I'd be put on immediate alert. If I were in the Secret Service I would react by alerting fellow agents, and she at the very least would be spoken with (to see if she was a threat to the protectee) and possibly taken off site for an in-depth interview. If I start to see tightness in the mouth I would know things were not going good and violence might be possible, and there would be little time to react because she is waiting for an opportunity to turn violent.◦
