Spotlight Effect and Deception

USA, California, Los Angeles

In Psychology, there is a concept called the Spotlight effect. "People tend to assume their features and behaviors are more salient to others than what they generally are. This is termed the Spotlight effect, the tendency to believe that other people are paying closer attention to one's appearance and behavior than they really are."

When people lie they often feel this spotlight effect. It can be hard to detect when others are experiencing the spotlight effect, but there can be leakage.  Here are some signs to look for:
  • Increased direct eye contact.
  • Increased nervousness.
  • Babbling after a lie, to get the taste of the lie out of their mouth, and distract the listener.
  • There are many more...
If you think (even if you are not sure) you have just seen the spotlight effect- all you need to say is something like, "I can see you are lying, it is like you are holding up a sign, I am lying.  You are not good at lying. One of the worst I've come across.  This is not going to end well for you, start telling me the truth- it is the only way out of this."◦

Should Mike Vernier be a Person of Interest? Mike Vernier is asking for the public's help in finding missing wife Denise Vernier.

I am immediately on guard when someone is offering, that everything was okay (several times).  Stumbling on his choice of words. Who said everything was okay and no problems? This is what I would ask if I was interviewing him.  See the shoulder shrugs, clear signs of indecisiveness.  Notice the way he is shaking his head.   This is clearly what we call 'clusters' and clusters of 2 or more are clear signs of anxiety about the subject matter of the conversation and is an area where follow up is needed.

When he says may have gotten a ride, notice how he no longer stumbles on his words, at this point it is a rehearsed script, and we need to be on guard when a person reverts to any script- this show us a possible practiced script and an unlikely explanation for her disappearance.

Wouldn't it be more logical that she had some sort of accident than getting a ride?!?!

"...may have got a ride..." makes no sense, and it is likely she was last alive in the car riding with his wife, as she rode to the place where she was killed.

"...go out further..." could also be a clue that she is located farther away than where they are currently searching.◦

Why it is harder for first responders to obtain compliance in a biological or chemical emergency.

PAJU, SOUTH KOREA - DECEMBER 15: Emergency service personnel in chemical protection clothing participate in a civil defense exercise on December 15, 2010 in Paju, South Korea. The nationwide exercises are intended to better prepare citizens for emergencies as tensions continue to rise following an artillery exchange between the two nations last month. The 20 minute exercise kicked off with air raid sirens with pedestrians required to head to designated bomb shelters and drivers required to stop their vehicles for 15 minutes. Okay, you are wearing huge suits that hide you posture, stance and gestures. The fabric is all the same color so it is hard to make out the arms and possible gestures directing people one way or another. Finally it is hard to hear and understand what the person might be saying.◦

Could this be the Smiley Face Killer?

Close-up of an array of frowning smiley faces

For years there has been speculation about the existence of Smiley Face Killer(s), because a number of young men have been found, drowned in rivers and lakes across several states over the last decade.  Two New York Detectives,  Gannon and Duarte have believe this is the work of a serial killer(s).  The 'victims' fit a profile of being popular, athletic, and good students and being last seen leaving a bar or party late at night, after drinking.  Many police departments  find it hard to believe this a work of a serial killer, and it is easier to believe that these are all accidental drownings of inebriated men.  The funny thing is: smiley faces are found on boat ramps, docks and bridges near the water where the bodies are recovered.

Another twist was there was a serial killer names Keith Jesperson , who was dubbed the 'Happy Face Killer' The nickname began because he signed anonymous confession letters with a smiley face.  Guess what he did for a living? He was a long-haul truck driver.

I have a Google New Alert for: 'Smiley face' killer.

This popped up today:

"The unemployed truck driver who police suspect is the "honeybee" killer loved ham radio, hunting and smiley face emoticons.."  Read the full story.

I would hope local investigators would cross reference his driving records (Milford Trucking Company) with the deaths of these young men.

Many current serial killer do have strong interests in other serial killers; several active serial killers are believe to be truck drivers (Articles about link between Truckers and Serial Killers); stressors usually trigger violent activities with those who are serial killers, lived a solitary lifestyle,  and those who knew him are saying, "He seemed to be a little bit different" and"he was a different kind of character"◦

President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev (L) holds a meeting with Nizhni Novgorod Region's governor Valery Shantsev at Gorki residence.

I have noticed Russian politicians do carry themselves with a certain old school strength and aggressiveness, which likely works well within their own country, but would not work as well with leaders of other countries. ◦

School Board Shootout Violence in Florida [Full Version] Raw Video Uncut

Please be aware this video is graphic.

This is very unusual for several different reasons.

He is not in the "fight" emotional state; notice how he doesn't even remove his hand from his pocket when  he is firing the weapon.  Notice how he raises the gun in a matter of fact manner-  He then is making the conscious decision to shoot and where to shoot.

Notice the reactions of the male members of the board.  Freeze and flight are seen, but all to varying degrees.

The way the people move is very real, but totally different than we'd see in movies and on the television.◦

My Comments on "'I love my wife very much. May God and Tanya forgive me.'"

What makes this hard to talk about case, is this single statement on Facebook. It says so very much...

It is likely that the father has murdered his own children and the father asks for his wife's and God's forgiveness.

The father made an unsuccessful attempt to take his own life.  However, his statement 'I love..." should have been, " I loved..." if he truly expected it to be a successful.  Did he subconsciously know he was not going to be successfully in his attempt?

How terrible is a father who can take the lives of his 3 sons, then balk at taking his own life.◦
