It can be used if you did not hear the last thing said, but it can also be done to excite a crowd's cheering or chants.◦

This Picture Says a Great Deal
NOVEMBER 10, 2010. Vladimir Chernikov, first deputy director general of Oranta Insurance Company, at the 4th annual international top managers forum Future of the Russian Insurance Market .
High confidence is seen with the steeple with the hands, and confidence in open sitting position with his legs. Finger in front of his mouth tells us he is listening. Having the hands (in the steeple) lets us know he is listening to what is being said. Interestingly, his eyebrows form the skeptic's eyebrows...◦

Interesting Gesture Showing How they Voted- With a X
Migrant workers from Myanmar gestures against voting in Myanmar's election, at the Thai-Myanmar border November 7, 2010. Polls opened under tight security in Myanmar's first election in 20 years on Sunday, a scripted vote that assures army-backed parties an easy win but brings a hint of parliamentary politics to the isolated, oppressive state.◦

No Political Person Should Use This Gesture, even in Brazil

Dilma Rousseff, Brazil's presidential candidate for the ruling Workers' Party, gestures as she leaves a voting booth in Porto Alegre October 31, 2010.
This gesture was made famous by Nixon as he boarded the military helicopter for the last time on the White House Lawn after resigning as President. It is probably one of the most 'popular' picture of Nixon and has come to symbolize the whole Watergate scandal.

Raise the Roof Gesture
Actress Nadia Khlifi poses during a photo call for the in-competition film Lo Sono Con Te by Guido Chiesa at the Rome Film Festival November 3, 2010.
When we do this, it is a sign that good things are happening. Most of the time it is saying there is too much excitement or emotion to keep in a small area, so the roof is going to upward...◦

Touching the Ear (or Around the Ear) and What it Means
Writer Ken Auletta speaks at the 2010 New Yorker Festival at SVA Theatre 2 on October 2, 2010 in New York City.
If we are touching around the ear while we are speaking it could mean we do not like what we are saying- or what we have to say.
If we are listening, it means we do not like what is being said.
The science about it is the ear (and nose) it is very thin, and when we are bothered, the nerve ending can become exited and subconsciously we often reach for the ear so the nerve ending do not bother us- it is a pacifying touch.

Lech Walesa Uses His Fist to Make a Forceful Point

Lech Walesa, former Polish president and founder of the Solidarity trade union, gestures as he speaks during a multimedia performance directed by Robert Wilson titled Solidarity. Freedom is the Name of Your Angel! at Gdansk Shipyard August 31, 2010. The event is part of 30th anniversary celebrations commemorating the signing of the Gdansk Agreement on August 31, 1980, an accord reached after a series of labour strikes by shipyard workers in Poland which gave the Solidarity trade union the unprecedented right in communist Europe to strike and organise itself as an independent union. ◦

Hamzi Mansour Gestures by Pointing Upward

Jordan's Islamic Action Front Party leader Hamzi Mansour gestures during a news conference in Amman August 2, 2010. The Islamic Action Front, the political wing of Jordan's Muslim Brotherhood, the country's largest political grouping, said on Monday that it has decided to boycott the November election in protest against a new voting system which it says damages democracy.
This is one of the most common political gestures in this part of the world. In western cultures the politicians rarely raise their hands above their shoulders when gesturing.◦

Gesture Says- I'm Hot and Could Faint

A-Studio member Keti Topuria at the opening ceremony for the New Wave 2010 international contest of young pop singers.
What is nice about this gesture is that it was borne out of the theater in the early 1900s when actors were taught to use large gestures, and there was always a damsel in distress ready to faint and there was no other more cliche' way to show the audience "I'm fainting."◦

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron Runs His Hand through His Hair

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron reacts after playing cricket inside a stadium in New Delhi July 29, 2010. Cameron trumpeted a $1.1 billion defence deal with India on Wednesday, an early result of a big diplomatic push to court Indian business and tap new sources of economic growth.
After not doing so good the Prime Minister shows some shame, laughs at himself, and rubs his hand through his hair (to pacify himself). What is interesting about this gesture it is a guesture that our mothers and fathers do to us when we were little and is an enduring gesture, when we are older we do it to attempt to create the same sence of comfort that it once brought us.◦

Survivor of the Stampede Shows Stress

Yvonne Schroeder (20), a survivor of the stampede at the Duisburg Love Parade techno festival on Saturday, breaks out in tears during a demonstration against the Mayor of Duisburg outside the Duisburg city hall July 29, 2010. Several hundred of protesters gathered outside the town hall to mourn the death of 21 techno fans in the stampede when hordes of young people pushed through a tunnel into the techno festival area at a former freight rail yard in Duisburg. The banner reads, Are people not worth more?
When we physically ache from a headache, we will often attempt to reduce the stress by rubbing on our temples.
We will also do this subconsciously when we are under stress and are thinking about something difficult to comprehend.
Physically there could be increased blood pressure and high heart rates and our bodies recognize the stress and we rub our temples.
It also allows a certain amount of eye blocking.
Notice the person in the background with their hand covering the mouth.
Emotionally charged moment.◦

How to Wave, Finger Position

Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan (L), India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and France's President Nicolas Sarkozy (front) gesture during a group photo at the G20 Summit in Toronto June 27, 2010.
Notice the two people in the above photo, the fingers should be together when when waving. If they are not together the gesture appear less genuine and "together."
Now you should also have your palm face the person you are waving to...◦

The Two Finger Point

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard gestures during a press conference following the Labour leadship spill which saw Gillard call a leadership ballot for the role of Prime Minister at Parliament House on June 24, 2010 in Canberra, Australia. Gillard demanded the ballot as party support for current PM Kevin Rudd collapsed. However no votes were cast in the caucus held this morning at 09:00 AEST, as Rudd conceded and stood down, making Gillard Australia's first female Prime Minister, with current treasurer Wayne Swan moving into the role of Deputy.
We all know that pointing is one of the most negative gestures we can do or see, you'd think adding a second finger would heightened the effect, but it actually reduces the negativity (it still is negative, just not as much), to further lessen the negativity you could employ the whole hand as a pointer...◦

Ecuador's Maria Fernanda Espinoza's Gesture Likely Means She is Speaking About Her Feelings, Thoughts, or Ideas

Ecuador's Cultural Patrimony Minister Maria Fernanda Espinoza gestures during a Reuters interview at the end of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) summit in Otavalo June 25, 2010.
She is interlocking her fingers and pointing to her heart, this usually means she is speaking "from the heart" and it is a strong bet this gesture would be followed up by opening her hands, palms up, symbolically letting the emotion -of her words- pour out from her heart.◦
