What is nice about this gesture is that it was borne out of the theater in the early 1900s when actors were taught to use large gestures, and there was always a damsel in distress ready to faint and there was no other more cliche' way to show the audience "I'm fainting."◦

Survivor of the Stampede Shows Stress

Yvonne Schroeder (20), a survivor of the stampede at the Duisburg Love Parade techno festival on Saturday, breaks out in tears during a demonstration against the Mayor of Duisburg outside the Duisburg city hall July 29, 2010. Several hundred of protesters gathered outside the town hall to mourn the death of 21 techno fans in the stampede when hordes of young people pushed through a tunnel into the techno festival area at a former freight rail yard in Duisburg. The banner reads, Are people not worth more?
When we physically ache from a headache, we will often attempt to reduce the stress by rubbing on our temples.
We will also do this subconsciously when we are under stress and are thinking about something difficult to comprehend.
Physically there could be increased blood pressure and high heart rates and our bodies recognize the stress and we rub our temples.
It also allows a certain amount of eye blocking.
Notice the person in the background with their hand covering the mouth.
Emotionally charged moment.◦

Thinking

WASHINGTON - OCTOBER 07: New America Foundation's Counterterrorism Strategy Initiative co-director Peter Bergen prepares to testify before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during a hearing about Al-Qaeda and Afghanistan on Capitol Hill October 7, 2009 in Washington, DC. On the eighth anniversary of the United States' invasion of Afghanistan, witnesses testified, and disagreed, about what affect a withdrawal of U.S. forces from that country would have on Al-Qaeda. Anytime we see someone touching their temple it is a sign of thinking. Here we see the thumb help supporting the head. Anytime we see the head being supported by the hand it could be a sign of boredom.
At this point we need to look at the eyes and see if they are engaged, if they are engaged it is a sign of thinking; if they are glazed over it is a sign of boredom.
Since we see slight tightness in his lips and forehead we can be sure he is engaged and he is thinking.◦

Violence Caught by Camera: Do not worry this was for a film

John Hamm got into full FBI mode as he shot a scene complete with a shoot out for the film The Town in Boston, MA on September 24, 2009. Fame Pictures, Inc
What we see here is the exact moment the gun is discharged his eyes involuntary close- Something we instinctually do whenever we hear startling noise.
Check out his facial expression: see the lines in his forehead, and see the tightness in his lips and checks. This is from either from fear or stress, or both.◦

Emma Roberts on the Set of Valentine's Day Shows Subtle Fear

Here we see subtle fear. While she does raise her eyebrows, we do not see full widening of the eye lids. In her forehead we see tightness of muscles. We also see a cross between fear and surprise in her mouth... it is opening like surprise, but the lips are showing some tension and this tension is something we see in fear. We can assume she has just learned something that was a total shock and it has emotionally placed her in a state of unease.◦

My Head Hurts

When we see this it is known to signify tension and my head hurts.
If she actually has a headache this would be a gesture to relieve the tension and pain by rubbing her temples.
It can also be done to show that she is in distress. We could imagine her hearing something and doing this gesture to signal, "boy my head hurts" symbolically.
It is a gesture showing some sort of internal struggle.◦

Eric Holder Speaks On Gang Violence And Crime At White...

WASHINGTON - AUGUST 24: U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder (R) pauses while delivering one of the keynote addresses during the White House National Conference on Gang Violence Prevention and Crime Control August 24, 2009 in Washington, DC. Holder outlined five points of crime prevention during the conference, which brought mayors, police chiefs and others to the White House. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)
When someone holds a finger to his temple or the side of their forehead it is a sign that they are thinking. Here we see the Attorney General look down and close his eyes, along with his finger is a clear example of someone attempting to remember something- to access his memory.◦

More to Love: Episode Four

Melissa and Lauren are sent home.
Wow are the producers/editors reading my blog?!?!? My techie is telling me there are a larger number of people from LA hitting the site. A larger part of my work is becoming consulting in the entertainment business so no biggie. I told him I didn't care and don't do the ip look up thingy...
Last week I made some big statements,
"They will be gone and they know it, Kristian and Danielle." I guess you can have a ring and still be gone, where was Kristian in this episode? Her minutes drastically cut!
and
"Where does Luke stand in all this? A big cardboard cutout could stand in for him." This week we see him emerge (slightly).
Onto the non verbals of this episode:
Good Wife/Bad Wife
Perhaps this clip will make it into some of my training materials. We have so much emotion. Role playing. Pacifying behavior. Subtle surprise. Truth. Head tilts. Shoulder shrugs. Eye movement. Non asymmetrical mouth positions. Sadness. Happiness and True smiles. Pursed lips. Eye direction clues. One shoulder shrug. Head tilts. Hand pointing. Social smiles. Nods. Anger. Face touching. Perverse pleasure at the expense of others pain. Watch and learn from this five minute clip showing more nonverbal and body language clues that I have ever seen in any reality TV show!
Greetings
Last week I mentioned, "Look at the greetings, it will be the best indication of the relationship. Excitement seen here is important."
Who wins?
Melissa's Greeting
Heather's Greeting
More Thoughts
Mandy clearly is showing much more emotion than she has this season. Luke is not an emotional guy, but I hear and see some things in this exchange that lead me to believe that Luke has a way to go:
- Luke does not show any emotion when she expresses 'calling a boyfriend' and shows non verbal clues that he is not planning on choosing her (sigh, mouth).
- Luke says, "It is going to get more difficult, not just for me, but for you" is a warning for her. Listen to the his voice. "not just for me" is said softer- it will not be as difficult for him as it will be for her.

Masking or Suppressing Facial Expressions
What to look for?
- Narrowing of the eye
- Tense forehead
- Tightened jaw muscles
The more slight and subtle you observe the above to more reliable the read. The quicker you see them, the more reliable they are. If they are shown in more than a subtle expression, or in the extreme, and the longer they appear on the face the LESS reliable is the concealment and more likely you are seeing the beginning of intense anger.
Tense forehead is usually shown in horizontal wrinkles appear across your forehead, in the above photograph a vertical line appears between the eyes on the lower part of the forehead, this usually shown in extreme emotion responses, such as anger and stress.
