Jurgen Melzer of Austria reacts during his match against Rafael Nadal of Spain at the Shanghai Masters tennis tournament October 14, 2010. Melzer won the match.
This is one of the better pictures in sports. Subtle surprise shown with his dropping of his jaw and mouth open; Anti gravity reaction by lifting his arms up; and pacifying by placing his racket on his head. Whenever I see a picture with this much going on, it is definitely a pic worth a thousand words.◦

Even though She has Covered Her Mouth, Look at the Eyes of Pamela Anderson to See the Emotion

Actress Pamela Anderson gestures onstage at the Comedy Central Roast Of David Hasselhoff held at Sony Pictures Studios on August 1, 2010 in Culver City, California. The''Comedy Central Roast of David Hasselhoff' will air on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
Some of the latest training tools for subtle and microexpressions only show the eyes; and with the eyes you can tell if underneath her hands there is a smile or surprise. I believe we can tell she is not smiling and since, even at this angle, we can see the whites of her eyes on both side of the pupils we are seeing surprise. Probably surprise because someone has gone too far in their jabs of Hasselhoff.◦

See No Evil...
N.C. State fans react to a foul against the Wolfpack during second-half action. Northwestern defeated N.C. State, 65-53 on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
This is one of those pictures that I love to see. High emotions usually bring out the best expressions.
First the fan in the middle, covering his ear because he doesn't like what he has heard (the whistle,) and hand over his forehead as he comprehends what has just happened. By placing his hand on his forehead it has served the purpose of a momentary eye block, and is a pacifying touch to his head, and at the same time signifies thought is occurring. His mouth has dropped open which is subtle surprise.
The fan to the right in the picture is showing us full surprise, while the other fan is showing us wonderment; and a tongue jut, and is generally saying with his expressions that he enjoys the competition and the higher stakes that the foul has created..◦

The Jaw Drop

Here we see it in conjunction with the facial expression of surprise. If the eyes were not wide open it would be considered subtle surprise. We can usually see the jaw drop when someone is excited, surprised, or even in times of uncertainty.◦

Jason Priestley Shows Surprise at Something Said

Aug 29 2009
Jason Priestley celebrates his 40th birthday at Tabu Nightclub Pictured :Jason Priestley Picture by: Splash News
Here we see Jason cover his mouth when someone else has said something. If we are talking and cover our mouth it is a sign we didn't (or couldn't believe) just say that; we also do this same thing when other say things we cannot believe or rather not of heard. Surprise is show when Jason raises his eyebrows.
Now in this example it is obvious, but covering the mouth while others are talking is more common in subtle ways that go unnoticed. I would often lunch at a place where I could see 50-100 different people eating and as I scanned the room it wasn't often that I did not see this occurring at any given time.◦

Subtle Expression of Surprise

BATH, UNITED KINGDOM - AUGUST 20: Kay Durham from Hayesfield Sixth Form reacts as she opens her A-level at Hayesfield Girls School on August 20, 2009 in Bath, United Kingdom. Results published today for more than 310,000 students across England, Wales and Northern Ireland showed that a quarter of A-levels were graded an A as students across the UK celebrated another year of record results. (Photo by Matt Cardy/Getty Images)
This is considered the SUBTLE expression of surprise because only the mouth and forehead is showing the expression of surprise. For it to be full surprise the eyes would be open wide- to be able to see everything.◦

More to Love: Episode Four

Melissa and Lauren are sent home.
Wow are the producers/editors reading my blog?!?!? My techie is telling me there are a larger number of people from LA hitting the site. A larger part of my work is becoming consulting in the entertainment business so no biggie. I told him I didn't care and don't do the ip look up thingy...
Last week I made some big statements,
"They will be gone and they know it, Kristian and Danielle." I guess you can have a ring and still be gone, where was Kristian in this episode? Her minutes drastically cut!
and
"Where does Luke stand in all this? A big cardboard cutout could stand in for him." This week we see him emerge (slightly).
Onto the non verbals of this episode:
Good Wife/Bad Wife
Perhaps this clip will make it into some of my training materials. We have so much emotion. Role playing. Pacifying behavior. Subtle surprise. Truth. Head tilts. Shoulder shrugs. Eye movement. Non asymmetrical mouth positions. Sadness. Happiness and True smiles. Pursed lips. Eye direction clues. One shoulder shrug. Head tilts. Hand pointing. Social smiles. Nods. Anger. Face touching. Perverse pleasure at the expense of others pain. Watch and learn from this five minute clip showing more nonverbal and body language clues that I have ever seen in any reality TV show!
Greetings
Last week I mentioned, "Look at the greetings, it will be the best indication of the relationship. Excitement seen here is important."
Who wins?
Melissa's Greeting
Heather's Greeting
More Thoughts
Mandy clearly is showing much more emotion than she has this season. Luke is not an emotional guy, but I hear and see some things in this exchange that lead me to believe that Luke has a way to go:
- Luke does not show any emotion when she expresses 'calling a boyfriend' and shows non verbal clues that he is not planning on choosing her (sigh, mouth).
- Luke says, "It is going to get more difficult, not just for me, but for you" is a warning for her. Listen to the his voice. "not just for me" is said softer- it will not be as difficult for him as it will be for her.

Making Movies and Acting
One of the best ways to learn and understand about gestures is to watch TV without the sound. Take a look at the following pictures taken yesterday of a movie being filmed.

Jennifer Lopez films scenes for The Back-Up Plan on a bench outside Central Park in NYC. Pictured: Jennifer Lopez Picture by: Janet Mayer / Splash News
Concern about something transpiring...when someone raises their hands it is in preparation for: eye/mouth blocking or a pacifying touch such as cradling or hugging the face with both hands.
Surprise
Compassion and concern with her hand over her heart; her eyes are puzzlement or strong empathy (as if she is feeling physical pain inside as a result of seeing someone else hurt).
Also of note, notice the large rings on both of her hands, this is by design to draw more attention to her hands and gestures.◦
