MIT's Media Lab has developed special glasses that read microexpressions.

MIT's Media Lab has developed special glasses. Using a built-in camera linked to software that analyzes facial micro-expressions, the attached earpiece whispers the true interpretation into one's ear. The camera tracks 24 "feature points" on your conversation partner's face; analyzing the micro-expressions, how often they appear, and for how long. Then it compares the collected data with its bank of known expressions.

When MIT researchers Picard and el Kaliouby were calibrating their prototype, they were surprised to find that the average person was only able to interpret, 54 percent of the 24 expressions on real, non-acted faces correctly. They reasoned that most people could use some help reading the real mood of people they were talking with. By contrast, the software correctly identifies 64 percent of the expressions.◦

Microexpressions with the Hereos vs. Villains

When Russell takes his seat, we see two microexpressions of contempt. It is rare to see contempt like Russell does here, usually a person shows contempt on only one side of the face, each and every time.

I would suggest watching the entire video without the volume, and studying their expression and gestures. I see contempt several more times, and Colby gives a great subtle microexpression of disgust. I believe there are 10+ microexpressions in this ten minute video.◦

Microexpression Training Review of Humintell’s MiX 2- Frontal, Profile and 3/4 Views Training

You may have remembered a little while back me posting about new tools developed by Humintell that replaced the older tools.

Well I have had an opportunity to kick the tires on some of their new tools and I am impressed.

Detecting microexpressions is all important to the craft of reading people, and one of the fundamentals of doing so. This is the same training government agencies that are in charge of the security use and train with the MiX 2- Frontal, Profile and 3/4 Views Training, it is the best of the best.

If you used to the old METT you will want to upgrade. I could score a 100% each and every time using the METT, with the MiX 2- Frontal, Profile and 3/4 Views Training I have been once again challenged. I had more control over the speed, and at a faster speed it took a little training to once again detect the subtle differences between fear and surprise.

The ¾ and profile views are a great addition and enhance your ability to read micro expressions in real life settings; after all it is not often you are looking at people straight on. I first thought it would be difficult, if not impossible to tell the difference between a smile and contempt from the profile angle, and I was wrong. Also the profile angle shows things like the eyebrows protruding in anger, subtle things that would take years to notice in the real world.

I can endorse the MiX 2- Frontal, Profile and 3/4 Views Training program and suggest if you want to be an expert, get certified immediately. It is not often you can spend an hour learning, practicing, and becoming certified that changes the way you look at the world and give you a clearer understanding of people.

Microexpression of Fear

Senate Finance Committee Votes On Health Care Reform Plan

WASHINGTON - OCTOBER 13: Senate Finance Committee member Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) talks with reporters before the committee is set to vote on health care reform legislation on Capitol Hill October 13, 2009 in Washington, DC. Snowe has not tipped her hand about which way she will vote on the groundbreaking legislation but some believe she may be the only Republican to support the bill.

Take a look at this photo taken several months ago that I just ran across.

Tightness in the lips, wide eyes with a great deal of whiteness showing, and lines across the forehead. Unmistakable Fear.◦

Survivor Samoa Episode 9 Another Great Tribal Council

Look at the intensity in Erik's eyes, watch how he holds his gaze for longer than would be normal. Then from the get go we get the fist pump, but this is not the fist pump for joy like we see from Tiger Woods when he sinks a putt, no this is acting out of anger. Then see Shambo gives us the microexpression of contempt.

When Jeff asks the old tribe about feeling welcome, notice how all three (you can see Russell is also in this stance) four are holding their hands clasped(about 2:30 into the video) this is a sign they are unwilling to talk openly. At 2:48 we see the elegant subtle expression of fear- look at her wide open eyes.

At 3:30 watch Jeff touch his nose when Jeff is asking him about his days being numbered. It could be that there was a piece of dirt there, but it also could be that he knew they were safe this evening. There are four nerve endings on the bridge of our noses that become irritated when we are under stress.

Timeout, I know everybody hates Russell, I was right there in the beginning, but let me tell you he played it perfectly when others were voting. Gazing to members of the other tribe, he was reading them...confirming they were voting for him... making sure they had to look away...

When Russell stands up to play the idol, watch it several times. You will see microexpressions of surprise, sadness, and fear at exactly 6:36.

Just enjoy the rest of the video...but I will leave with you with one thing that I cannot figure out, Dave. Watch him and he never shows negative gestures and body language at the prospect of what is occurring, he only shows surprise but no fear, sadness, no anger...◦

Survivor Samoa Episode 8

0:08 We see contempt, moving one side of her mouth to the side.

2:05 We see Monica shrug with only one shoulder.

2:07 We see Erik raise his eyebrows and you can see lines laterally across his forehead, this is sarcasm as she says you never know who to trust.

2:28 Erik begins speaking and once again alienates himself again because he is over confident. If you are a someone who wants to play the game of Survivor, watch the reaction of the others (especially from his old tribe) this should have been a clue to him of what was coming. If you make it on the show, watch the reactions at the tribal consoles! Shrugs, lick licking and lip piercing, and the micro expression of disgust can all be seen.

3:01 Russell answers the question well to start with, but he should not have said that Erik will be surprised. Russell's biggest liability is his pride (in his game)gets in the way and he reveals too much.

Had Erik paid more attention to reactions of others, especially his former tribe members he might have realized his fate, and may have played the idol. I even saw one former tribe member walk more slowly to the area where you write the votes... everything matters.

Then fast forward to the reading of the votes, study Erik... you can see him thinking and understanding. Watch the emotion drain from his face, thinking, ever so subtle sadness in his mouth and subtle surprise in his eyes.

Watch the others react as he leaves: shame, happiness, sadness, and contempt.◦

Survivor Samoa Episode 6 Tribal Council

Tribal Council starts about 2 minutes into the video. This is once again a great study in body language and reading people.

There are roughly ten items I could talk about in the first 8 seconds; I choose the fear expression and adam's apple jump from John as he leans forward- eyes wide open and lips pulled back.

Watch as people exhale, most had been holding their breath, and watch their throats to see them swallow and their adam's apples moves, they are experiencing stress.

We go a couple of minutes seeing sadness, frustration, and defeat and several head shakes, then BAM, at 5:51 we are rewarded with the microexpression of ANGER, her eyes are first wide open, then a split second later the eye lids tighten.

At 6:47 we see surprise, jaw and eyes wide open.

At 7:27 Erik becomes dominant and watch the finger pointing towards the other tribe. He may of alienated himself for when the tribes merge. Pointing a finger at another is the most aggressive gestures a person can do, and people absolutely hate it when someone points at them in this manner.◦

Humintell's New MiX 2 Microexpression Training Tool Released!

Something exciting and new has just happened this month. We have a new microexpression tool! I have been in contact with the good folks at Humintell because this month they just released the new and improved set of tools including one that is replacing the old METT training tool. They have some new features that I really want to check out, like 3/4 and side views! Even though I have been certified as an expert, I'm sure it will improve my skills.

If you are not familiar with Humintell it is a company that provides unique training and research to various individuals and companies in the field of facial expressions, emotion recognition and detecting deception.

Dr. David Matsumoto is the Director of Humintell. Dr. Matsumoto is an expert in the field of facial expressions, microexpressions, gesture, nonverbal behavior, emotion and deception. He is also is also a Professor of Psychology at San Francisco State University and Director of the Culture and Emotion Research Laboratory. I first became aware of Dr. David Matsumoto when he published some exciting work that further proved emotions and expressions were universal by studying blind athletes who exhibited the same expressions as their seeing counterparts.

They have made a training demo for the MiX 2-Microexpression online application.

Humintell's MiX 2 Training features a post test, 16 instructional videos, practice with 42 images and a post test. Score 80% on the post test at a speed of at least 200msec and receive a certificate of completion for your training. Training is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Check the software out online, at Humintell.

As a bonus, if you like the content of my site you need to check out David Matsumoto: The Blog and start following him.◦

President Obama, Professor Gates, Sergeant Crowley over Beers

Obama, Biden talk with Prof. Gates, Sgt. Crowley over beers at White House

U.S. President Barack Obama (R), Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. (L) and Sergeant James Crowley meet in the Rose Garden of the White House, July 30, 2009. Last week Crowley arrested Gates in Gates' home. UPI/Pete Souza/White House Press Office Photo via Newscom

Obviously the incident at Gates' Home was an emotional one, where both individuals have to share some responsibility for not being calm. An incident where body language and not mirroring each others emotions would have had a better conclusion. Hindsight...

Okay we will never know what is being said over beers, or will we?

Obama, Biden talk with Prof. Gates, Sgt. Crowley over beers at White House

Above Gates is speaking using gestures. With this gestures he is speaking from his perspective. We use this to explain how we feel by moving our hand back and forth from the heart. Crowley is leaning back- which could be comfort- but it is not- no one can feel totally comfortable at the White House- he is more 'stand offish' while the President is leaning forward, which shows interest, but also notice how he is leaning towards Crowley- this is a way of showing some sort of support or concern.

Obama Meets Over Beer With Harvard Prof. Gates And Cambridge Police Officer

Wow, good job photographer! The photographer has either caught a microexpression or a macroexpression. His mouth (dropped open) shows surprise while his eyes (lowering of the eyebrow and intense gaze) and forehead shows anger. Crowley cannot believe what the President is saying. If it is a microexpression we see a true emotion, if he maintained this expression for one to four seconds then Crowley could be purposely showing his discomfort or it is a true emotion.

One of the best photographs of the day is the one below. It tells me they have moved beyond the incident from a personal level. This was taken as they made their way from the White House to the table. Here we see Crowley help Gates down the stairs. Neither would allow this type of contact if they still harbored deep negatitive emotional feelings towards each other.

Analysis of South Carolina's Governor, Mark Sanford's Press Conference

Role analysis, I believe he is truly sorry for what has happened, but why is he sorry? Is it for his family, for his friend, for his career/job? After reviewing the tape this is the order of importance:

1)Friends
2)Career/Job
3)Family

I based this on his emotional level as he is speaking about these things. Generally there could be a build up as the speech goes on, but in this speech if I had to rank the emotional level it would be 3 for family, 7 for friend, and 5 for job.

00:58 Eye Blocking, is a nonverbal behavior that can occur when we feel
threatened and/or don’t like what we see. In this case he doesn't like seeing the reporters and the media.

01:18 Looking Down, Shame. People who are feeling ashamed, embarrassed, or sad, deliberately look away. Shame is a negative emotion occurring when we evaluate things as going worse than we expected.

01:55 Slight Lip Lick (see below).

01:59 Microexpression Subtle, Sadness, in mouth only.

Generally he doesn't want to look straight ahead.

02:14 Lip Lick, is a pacifying behavior (often referred to as an adapter in academia literature) serving to calm us down after we experience something unpleasant or downright nasty.

03:00 More emotional when speaking about his friend than about his wife and family.

03:47 Lip Lick, pacifying behavior.

05:20 More comfortable speaking about faith, looking more straight on. This is odd because there should be some shame or emotion to convey he is in turmoil with his faith and what he has done. I believe this is a sign that is is most sorry for being caught.

06:15 Eyes Down, Shame.

07:26 Full Shoulder Shrug, this needs to be evaluated in the context of what is being said. The shrug is a universal gesture that is used to show that a person does not know or understand what you are talking about. In this case he doesn't know how this will end.

07:46 Expel Air, Relief.

08:11 Lip Lick, pacifying behavior.

08:20 Becoming more emotional over resignation (not of his governorship).

Voice Analysis

Final Analysis
It appears because of his emotional level, and his conversation with his father-in-law two weeks prior, that his marriage was in extreme jeopardy before this getaway. His last conversation with his father-in-law was not as civil as he portrays it in this speech. Due to his high emotional response when speaking of his friend and political partner, he had higher aspirations than just Governor. I believe he does not want his wife speaking to the media. It may also be that he wanted to get "caught" if his marriage was over, this could have been orchestrated to be as sensational as it was, to control the revelation, gain the upper hand, and receive national exposure. It would have been very messy if this was a drawn out divorce, that his career would not be able to handle. His resignation (not of the state) is an attempt to convey punishment.◦
