Turkish Ambassador Clearly Shows FEAR in News Conference Today

Turkish Ambassador to the U.N. Ertugrul Apakan speaks during a news conference in Kabul June 24, 2010. Completing a four-day visit to the country, ambassadors from the 15-nation U.N. Security Council said they were reviewing the 137-name U.N. Taliban blacklist case by case.
The difference between fear and surprise is usually found in the lips, it appears to me that the Ambassador does have tension in his lips...◦

Brendan Fraser Shows Us His Practiced Face of Fear

Actor Brendan Fraser arrives at the 67th Annual Golden s Awards presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at Hotel Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.
Actors practice facial expressions and understand how important they are to their craft. Certain actors have enhanced their careers because of certain trademark facial expression(s), for instance Jack Black's skeptic brow, Jim Carry has about ten different ones, Robert De Niro has the best subtle expressions that are only noticed in close ups (to the untrained eye) that are both powerful and revealing...
I have seen Brendan Fraser use this expression in almost every movie I've seen him in; I think in George of the Jungle he did it every time he hit the tree...
Fear is shown in the eyes, forehead, and tighten lips. His lips are moving in a smile shape, whereas in full fear the lips move back across the face more horizontally.◦

Good Fear
A girl enjoys a sled ride in Washington after a major snow storm hit the northeastern United States, December 20, 2009.
Fear is always a good thing, it is what causes it that can be bad.
Fear is our bodies natural reaction to external threats, the body automatically places us on alert. Our eyes widen to take as much in as possible. Our muscles tighten to brace for possible attack. Chemicals in our body are released, including adrenaline, to help us react.
Then it all can change...
Several seconds after this picture was taken she had to have a smile from ear to ear- it is starting to change right now.◦

Geisha Subtle Fear

Fear and Surprise are often confused. This is fear because we see way too much of the white in her eyes, we always show more in fear compared to surprise. We can also see fear in her forehead and how her eyebrows are coming closer to each other.
For what it is worth, this picture was staged and had we seen this in a video instead of a picture, we would have noticed the "staged" emotion because she is doing what I call fishing for an emotion. Many people do not know how to fake a true emotional facial expression so they end up giving us a couple of different emotions; those of us trained to detect facial expressions see this as tripping over their emotions- in a couple of seconds they show us a couple of emotions, lasting a beat too long, and not matching in either their eyes and mouth. If you were a detective, and untrained in facial expressions, you'd see whatever you'd thought (your perception) you saw but in reality you only saw 1/3 or 1/2 of it...and move on unrecognizing it as a hot spot.◦

Disgust and Fear

Here we see subtle disgust in the mouth area, see how the top of her mouth moves upward. This is involuntary and closes off the nasal passages.
Fear is seen in the eyes and forehead. In both anger and fear we can see a line form between the eyebrows as seen in this photograph. In anger we'd expect her eyes to be more "beady" instead of open.◦

Microexpression of Fear

WASHINGTON - OCTOBER 13: Senate Finance Committee member Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) talks with reporters before the committee is set to vote on health care reform legislation on Capitol Hill October 13, 2009 in Washington, DC. Snowe has not tipped her hand about which way she will vote on the groundbreaking legislation but some believe she may be the only Republican to support the bill.
Take a look at this photo taken several months ago that I just ran across.
Tightness in the lips, wide eyes with a great deal of whiteness showing, and lines across the forehead. Unmistakable Fear.◦

Rusty Interview from Dateline
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
This is a study in someone who doesn't want to speak, is nervous, and shows us this with almost every movement. Things to look for are biting lips, scratching neck, nervous chuckle, pursed lips, shrugs, rubbing hands, faster blink rate, eye direction clues, answers a question with a question, torso and head pointing towards the exit.
I suggest watching this video several times.◦

Subtle Fear as the House Holds Hearing On Bank of America-Merrill Lynch Deal

WASHINGTON - NOVEMBER 17: Timothy Mayopolous, former general counsel of Bank of America, testifies during a joint hearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and its Domestic Policy Subcommittee November 17, 2009 on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. The hearing was to examine how the merger of Bank of American and Merrill Lynch had turned into a federal bailout.
See the eyes wide open, drawing in of the eyebrows (he is at the point where he is making the Fight vs Flight response- this could quickly and easily turn to an anger expression), and lines become deeper between the eyebrows and on the forehead.◦

Ballon Boy's Dad is Scared
Balloon Boy hoax parents Richard and Mayumi Heene leave district court after pleading guilty to charges stemming from the incident at the Larimer County Justice Center in Fort Collins, Colorado on November 13, 2009.
See how Richard is raising his checks, this is a protective facial expression. It is something we unconsciously do to protect our eyes. Likely this is one of those old gestures that even cave men did when faced with possible danger of being attacked. While he likely is about to be attacked by the media without better stories to cover, you will see this at times when a physical assault is not even possible in your everyday lives if you are on the lookout for it. The grimace is unmistakable.◦

Survivor Samoa Episode 9 Another Great Tribal Council
Look at the intensity in Erik's eyes, watch how he holds his gaze for longer than would be normal. Then from the get go we get the fist pump, but this is not the fist pump for joy like we see from Tiger Woods when he sinks a putt, no this is acting out of anger. Then see Shambo gives us the microexpression of contempt.
When Jeff asks the old tribe about feeling welcome, notice how all three (you can see Russell is also in this stance) four are holding their hands clasped(about 2:30 into the video) this is a sign they are unwilling to talk openly. At 2:48 we see the elegant subtle expression of fear- look at her wide open eyes.
At 3:30 watch Jeff touch his nose when Jeff is asking him about his days being numbered. It could be that there was a piece of dirt there, but it also could be that he knew they were safe this evening. There are four nerve endings on the bridge of our noses that become irritated when we are under stress.
Timeout, I know everybody hates Russell, I was right there in the beginning, but let me tell you he played it perfectly when others were voting. Gazing to members of the other tribe, he was reading them...confirming they were voting for him... making sure they had to look away...
When Russell stands up to play the idol, watch it several times. You will see microexpressions of surprise, sadness, and fear at exactly 6:36.
Just enjoy the rest of the video...but I will leave with you with one thing that I cannot figure out, Dave. Watch him and he never shows negative gestures and body language at the prospect of what is occurring, he only shows surprise but no fear, sadness, no anger...◦

Survivor Samoa Episode 7
Last night's tribal council was not as emotionally packed and charged as the past several. I found the electing of "Shambo" as the leader to be the most emotionally charged event. Take a look at the other women's faces.
The first woman's face we see subtle surprise in the eyes, and hand in front of her mouth- she either doesn't want to say something or dislikes what is being said- you can be the judge. If you are unfamiliar with detecting micro expressions you may have to pause and move around the video a little to see her eyes "pop."
The second woman we see the subtle expression of anger in her eyes, see the intensity of her gaze; and pursed lips...◦

Survivor Samoa Episode 6 Tribal Council
Tribal Council starts about 2 minutes into the video. This is once again a great study in body language and reading people.
There are roughly ten items I could talk about in the first 8 seconds; I choose the fear expression and adam's apple jump from John as he leans forward- eyes wide open and lips pulled back.
Watch as people exhale, most had been holding their breath, and watch their throats to see them swallow and their adam's apples moves, they are experiencing stress.
We go a couple of minutes seeing sadness, frustration, and defeat and several head shakes, then BAM, at 5:51 we are rewarded with the microexpression of ANGER, her eyes are first wide open, then a split second later the eye lids tighten.
At 6:47 we see surprise, jaw and eyes wide open.
At 7:27 Erik becomes dominant and watch the finger pointing towards the other tribe. He may of alienated himself for when the tribes merge. Pointing a finger at another is the most aggressive gestures a person can do, and people absolutely hate it when someone points at them in this manner.◦

UCLA Student's Throat Slashed in Lab, Man Held

Students and faculty at UCLA are stunned following a horrific attack in a campus chemistry lab in which a male student allegedly slashed the throat of a female victim.
When a person folds their arms after something like this it is a self hug and they are attempting to comfort themselves.
Rubbing the neck is a way to relieve stress and is a self pacifying gesture, it originates back to when we were babies and our parents would always hold our necks and the touch was comforting. Physical stress and pain can build in our neck muscles and touching them can relieve the stress.
Looking down is a way of blocking out the rest of the world so they can cognitively processed what has happened, it allows their brain to work without the distraction of what is going on in the present.
The young woman who is holding her hand over her mouth is still showing a great deal of fear or surprise in her eyes, evidenced by how wide she is holding them open. Holding her hand in front of her mouth is a defense mechanism to control herself so her emotion is not verbalized (it could be verbalized in screaming, crying, in words, or even exhaling her breathe).◦
