Angelina Jolie's Awkward Pose on the Red Carpet

What is this all about?  This has become the body language issue of the week!

It is meant to be sexy. When a beautiful woman shows "more" skin that is usually covered by fabric, guys cannot resit the urge to look, and hope for more and more skin. It does not matter if the woman is in a pioneer dress to the ankles, if we see the skin of the lower leg, it has the same effect.  Guys are very primitive when it comes to sexuality. There is a lesson here for every woman.

The best at this was... believe it or not... Jessica Rabbit...

Off course it is a whole lot easier when you're a cartoon.

But it falls short when it is practiced, contrived, and not at all natural. Hindsight is 20/20, but if she would have consulted me about the pose I would have told her to move around naturally in a circle when the photographers wanted a shot of her in the dress, move into the pose, and immediately out of the pose, and under no circumstances hold the pose.  The photographers would have caught her at her most sexual and it would have seemed natural.  Also notice how she holds her head and her facial expressions, she is going for a certain coy look.  A look that does not fit with the setting, it would work great for the after Oscar party, but not on the red carpet.

What she does great is the angles with her arm...

Judge Belvin Perry who is Residing in the Casey Anthony Trial has Happy Feet/Legs

There are people who for a variety of reasons are always moving their legs or feet.

I even have seen a commercial for a pill to reduce this effect, which is a little crazy, unless it is for strictly neurological reasons that the shaking occurs, if not the drug companies are once again treating the symptom instead of the root cause.

Most often this movement is a result of excess adrenaline in the system, and the person is subconsciously burning off the adrenaline.

I have seen this occur because there was excessive internal struggles in a male individual who was going through the gender reassignment process. When he was dressed as a male would constantly be moving his legs  and when dressed as a woman her legs would be perfectly calm- the individual never knew this, but it was clear to me he/she was making a decision that he/she felt most comfortable with.

I have also seen this with a person playing poker when they just had been dealt a big hand.

It is likely the judge in this high profile case knows that his every move and word will be documented, and recorded, and analyzed, and his system is either creating nervous energy or he is experiencing general excitement that shows in his body language in the form of lower body movements.◦

Poker Series: Happy Feet

I'm beginning to think that the only people taking the time to learn about body language are poker players. I play the game but usually online, because I like the mathematics of the game and let's just leave it at that.

One of the biggest tells in ANYTHING, not just poker, is happy feet. The feet and legs are the least concentrated part of the body (when people are trying to conceal emotion) and it is where leakage is most likely to occur. Think of a 2-4 year old who just got a new present, he/she cannot stop running in place they are so excited.

Even if you cannot see the feet you can usually tell by looking at slight movements in the shoulders; there is even one professional player who has long hair and every 500-600 hands shows happy feet by a barely perceptible three or four bounces of his hair that lays on his shoulders.

One note of caution for the detective or manager using body language to be better at your job- moving feet or fidgeting feet can signal a desire to remove oneself from the room, or boredom so please take the movement of feet and legs in the context that you observe it.

While playing cards, especially when first looking at dealt cards or after the flop, and... "happy feet are seen or felt- you're not to happy with what is dealt."

As If They Need To Appear Bigger: Sumo Wrestlers

Mongolian Sumo Grand Champion Asashoryu to retire

A file photo dated 06 January 2010 shows Mongolian sumo grand champion, or Yokozuna, Asashoryu performing dohyo-iri, or the ring entrance ceremony at Meiji Shrine in central Tokyo. Asashoryu announced his intention to retire from professional sumo wrestling on 04 February to take responsibility for his drunken assault on a man.

Dohyo-iri is is a ring-entering ceremony where the wrestler will make himself bigger by widening his stance and as we see here opening his arms. It is done to intimidate their opponent.

We can see variations of this in everyday life: people will place their hands on their hips, arms out to the sides with bent elbows.

Most people feel most comfortable when they are standing with their feet shoulder width, if you see them out farther, it is to appear larger.

Men before a fight will often take in a large breath expanding their torso which serves both the purpose of taking in oxygen, and to appear larger; sometimes this is done at a night club to impress the object of their attraction.◦

PART TWO: A Four-Domain Model for Detecting Deception: Emphasis

Written by Guest Contributor Joe Navarro.

When people speak, they naturally incorporate various parts of their body, such as the eyebrows, head, hands, arms, torso, legs, and feet, to emphasize a point for which they feel deeply or emotionally. This movement proves important to investigators because, as a rule, people emphasize when genuine. Liars, for the most part, do not emphasize with nonverbals.

They will think of what to say and how to deceive, but rarely do they think about the presentation of the lie. When compelled to lie, most people do not realize how much emphasis or accentuation enters into everyday conversations. For the interviewer, emphasis accurately reflects reality or the truth.

When liars attempt to fabricate an answer, their emphasis looks unnatural or is delayed; they rarely emphasize where appropriate, or they choose to do so only on unimportant matters. People accentuate both verbally and nonverbally in their interactions. They emphasize verbally through voice, pitch, tone, or repetition. On the other hand, they emphasize nonverbally, which can prove even more accurate and useful to investigators. People who typically use their hands while speaking punctuate their remarks with hand gestures that emphatically illustrate or exclaim.

They also may thrust forward, point, or pound the desk as they emphasize. Others accentuate with the tips of their fingers, either touching things or gesturing with them. Hand behaviors compliment speech, thoughts, and true sentiments.

Raising eyebrows (eyebrow flash) or widening eyes also emphasizes a point.

When interested, people lean their torsos forward and, often, employ gravity-defying gestures, such as raising up on the balls of their feet as they make a significant or emotionally charged point. While sitting down, some emphasize by raising the knee to highlight important points. Occasionally, people will add emphasis by slapping their knee as it comes up, indicative of emotional exuberance. Gravity-defying gestures symbolize emphasis and true sentiment, both of which liars rarely possess.

In contrast, people de-emphasize or show lack of commitment by speaking behind their hands or showing limited facial expression as if to control their countenance because they are not committed to what they are saying.

Deceptive people often show deliberative, pensive displays, such as touching fingers to their chin or stroking their cheeks, as though they still are thinking about something, rather than emphasizing the point they are making. They are evaluating what they said and how it is being received, which is inconsistent with honest behavior.

Leg Cross

Businesswomans legs under table during meeting

Crossed legs are a sign that a negative attitude or defensive attitude may be the case. It is a barrier and defensive way to symbolically protecting the genital region. The person may not be open to discussion or new ideas.

It obviously can have slightly different meanings for women, because they are taught to cross legs when wearing skirts and dresses. You can usually judge how neutral or negative the leg cross by how relaxed their legs are...◦

Siting in a Relaxed and Comfortable Position

Happy woman with laptop in armchair

This person is very comfortable and relaxed. When we place ourselves in positions where making a quick exit is a little more difficult we are feeling safe. If someone is draping their leg over the arm of a chair while talking to you, it could mean they are not taking the conversation with you seriously- it all depends on the context.◦

Rusty Interview from Dateline

This is a study in someone who doesn't want to speak, is nervous, and shows us this with almost every movement. Things to look for are biting lips, scratching neck, nervous chuckle, pursed lips, shrugs, rubbing hands, faster blink rate, eye direction clues, answers a question with a question, torso and head pointing towards the exit.

I suggest watching this video several times.◦

Signs of Danger and a Crime: Store Robbery Caught on Video

Aug 24, 2009

Watch this video a couple of times.

Watch the two people at the counter, they pick up on a couple of things that make them a little wary because they check out the two people that have just entered the business.

What we see are two people enter the store with their hands in their pockets, and the first one is fidgeting with what turns out to be a gun.

They are "friends" yet enter in a single file line with several feet between themselves. You'd expect them to be walking together as they approached the store, only separating as they entered through the doorway. Then it would be normal for them to stand together.

See the intensity of how they look towards their destination, when we enter a business it is more normal to glance at all parts of the area, to quickly gain an understanding of the space and to see if their are friends or foes around.

The leader is walking around, adrenaline is running through his system. He turns his back, this is to gain the courage... it is at this point where he will either chicken out or make his move...

Even though we do not see it is this case a couple of other signs of immediate danger are: are balling up hands into fist; some sort of slap of hands, chest thump, stomp of feet- something to get the blood going, eye intensity, sweat developing on the upper lip or brow, deep intake of breath.

It turns out these two victimize the clerk and still remain at large in the LA area.◦

Stacy Keibler Knows How to Change the Shape of Her Body in Photographs

Stacy Keibler hosts The Fantasy Football Superdraft

Aug 29 2009
Stacy Keibler hosts The Fantasy Football Superdraft at Jet Nightclub in the Mirage Hotel. Pictured: Stacy Keibler Picture by: Splash News

Here we see a couple of things that anybody that is being photographed and want to make certain parts of their body smaller can do.

First, notice the angles created by her left arm and her legs- this adds interest to the photograph.

By placing her feet together, and one in front of the other it also adds interest, but more importantly adds "interest" to her legs and hips.

She has turned her hips slightly to minimize their width.

See how she holds her torso off angle to minimize her waist.

By squaring her shoulders to the camera, she has made this the biggest part of her body. This makes everything else seem smaller. Models have always know if they can twists their hips and square their shoulders they will appear to have a smaller waist and hip area.

Just in case you thought I picked one picture that happened to capture this, take a look:
