This fuzzy video shows The New York Post's State Editor Fred Dicker was involved in a confrontation with Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino outside a Business Council of New York State dinner in Bolton Landing last night.
What is interesting here is the level of emotion the reporter is showing from the start of the exchange; fingers pointing upward then more towards each other; you can see Paladino with enjoyment on his face, then after he begins talking you can see anger.◦

Marion Bartoli Facial Expression of Anger Towards Judge

Marion Bartoli of France takes on Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria during their fourth round match for the Wimbledon Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, in London, Britain, 28 June 2010.
We see intensity in her gaze; also notice the tongue jut or pacifying lip lick- if it is a tongue jut she knows she is pushing the "relationship" between judge and player and is getting away with this brief expression of dissatisfaction; if it is a lick lip is her way of attempting to give herself some comfort in a trying situation.
Also notice the angle of her face as compared to the angle of her gaze; when you are seeing a high intensity emotion and the angles are different it should be noted. It can signal dominant/submissiveness and/or willingness to fight/flight...◦

Lasy Gaga Shows Her Teeth in Anger and Upper Lip in Disgust

American pop singer, Lady Gaga arrives at Narita International Airport on April 13, 2010 in Narita, Japan.
Whenever we mimic animal like aggression, like we see here with Lady Gaga showing us her teeth, it is aggressive anger and showing she is willing to lash out and fight. Her left hand is even forming a claw...
A nice snarl.◦

Wyclef's Personal Statement on the Accusations Against Yele Haiti
Thank you Anonymous for posting this in the comment section of a previous post:
There have been several news stories about Wyclef Jean's Haiti charity not being legitimate and allegations that he is taking money from it.
Wyclef put out a video refuting the accusations today. At first I thought he was being honest, but then he started covering his mouth, touching his face, and being evasive in some of the things he said. What do you think?
I got the impression that he was lying. I would be very interested in your thoughts on the video.
This is a great video.
I see anger when he first speaks about rumors. Throughout the speech I see him raise his eyebrows so lines form on his forehead, this is a good sign of confidence in what he is speaking about. In a way it is equivalent of saying how dare you question me...
When he first touches his face at 3:35 he first rubs his hands together and touches his face, you can see sadness in his eyebrows and he is talking about being "attacked" and then exhales a big breath. He is experiencing so much emotion. When lying emotions are usually reserved, it is clear he does not like being in this position, and he is under stress because of the accusation.
When he again touches his face at around 4:00 minutes, he is speaking about the footage of what he has seen. It is pacifying and understandable given what he has just seen in Haiti.
From a statement analysis perspective he explains expenses, all charities use funds received for business expenses, for some it is a gross fraud when only 10% make it to the people that need it. He states about some expenses surrounding concerts (I would assume are fund raisers) including paying the band and managers, etc. this makes some sense to me, while these expenses could add up and be sizable... it would take a accountant to see if the charity is making enough money to justify these expenses.
I believe he is HONEST and really wants to make a difference and help in this video.◦

Aggressive Anger!!!

The beady eyes, brows coming together, mouth closed, head tilted forward is aggressive anger.
If I saw this facial expression in public, I'd be put on immediate alert. If I were in the Secret Service I would react by alerting fellow agents, and she at the very least would be spoken with (to see if she was a threat to the protectee) and possibly taken off site for an in-depth interview. If I start to see tightness in the mouth I would know things were not going good and violence might be possible, and there would be little time to react because she is waiting for an opportunity to turn violent.◦

Full Anger and Disgust
Nebraska head coach Bo Palini yells at a ref during the Huskers' 13-12 loss to Texas in the Big 12 Football Championship at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Saturday, December 5, 2009.
Anger in the eyes, eyebrows and tightness in the lips- even when speaking you can tell the difference between tight or normal lips.
Full disgust, see how the wrinkles are on the bridge of the nose and how the upper lips is moving upward, this can also been seen while talking.◦

Matt Damon Attends Museum Of The Moving Image Salutes Clint Eastwood

NEW YORK - DECEMBER 01: Actor Matt Damon attends the Museum of The Moving Image salutes Clint Eastwood at 583 Park on December 1, 2009 in New York City.
Take a look at the intensity in the eyes and how the eyebrows have slightly moved downward and together. Also take a look at his facial expression. What we see here is subtle anger in his eyes, and his facial expression is showing a lack of respect for this particular photographer. It is like he is about to say, "Come on guy, not this again."
Paparazzi?!?!? It is likely Matt has dealt with this photographer in the past.◦

Evaluate Who is Most Likely to Escalate the Confrontation

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND - NOVEMBER 21: A protestor is arrested after trying to disrupt the march up Queen Street as part of the Vote With Your Feet March on November 21, 2009 in Auckland, New Zealand. The March for Democracy was being held to protest against the Government's failure to respond to amending the anti-smacking legislation.
The protester is the least likely to escalate. Even though he is pointing, he is pointing to the torso which is less confrontational than pointing towards the face, there is also no muscle tightness in his hand and fingers. There is not the intensity in the eyes that we would expect from someone who is ready to fight. His mouth is relaxed and I could just as easily see him smiling after making his statement.
Now look at the officer-to the left- who is also speaking, tightness in lips; hand grabbing forearm. Notice the female officer in the background, subtle disgust...◦

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - NOVEMBER 21: Tigers team owner Seamus McPeake argues with referee Michael Aylen during the round nine NBL match between the Melbourne Tigers and the Cairns Taipans at the State Netball Hockey Centre on November 21, 2009 in Melbourne, Australia.
Obvious Anger, bet we are looking at much more, DOMINANCE. Seamus McPeake is invading personal space, head tilted downward (this is a clear sign of willingness to continue raising the level of anger.)◦

Survivor Samoa Episode 7
Last night's tribal council was not as emotionally packed and charged as the past several. I found the electing of "Shambo" as the leader to be the most emotionally charged event. Take a look at the other women's faces.
The first woman's face we see subtle surprise in the eyes, and hand in front of her mouth- she either doesn't want to say something or dislikes what is being said- you can be the judge. If you are unfamiliar with detecting micro expressions you may have to pause and move around the video a little to see her eyes "pop."
The second woman we see the subtle expression of anger in her eyes, see the intensity of her gaze; and pursed lips...◦

Survivor Samoa Episode 6 Tribal Council
Tribal Council starts about 2 minutes into the video. This is once again a great study in body language and reading people.
There are roughly ten items I could talk about in the first 8 seconds; I choose the fear expression and adam's apple jump from John as he leans forward- eyes wide open and lips pulled back.
Watch as people exhale, most had been holding their breath, and watch their throats to see them swallow and their adam's apples moves, they are experiencing stress.
We go a couple of minutes seeing sadness, frustration, and defeat and several head shakes, then BAM, at 5:51 we are rewarded with the microexpression of ANGER, her eyes are first wide open, then a split second later the eye lids tighten.
At 6:47 we see surprise, jaw and eyes wide open.
At 7:27 Erik becomes dominant and watch the finger pointing towards the other tribe. He may of alienated himself for when the tribes merge. Pointing a finger at another is the most aggressive gestures a person can do, and people absolutely hate it when someone points at them in this manner.◦

Pursed lips, furrowed brow, head tilted down, slightest nose lifting, a great deal of the whites of his eyes showing means one thing: he is angry and disgusted. He looks like a parent who doesn't want to take the time to scold a youngster because he is so disappointed in their actions he doesn't want to bother.◦

Abuse...Roses...Abuse

Nothing says, "I'm sorry" better than roses.
Receiving flowers is a common thread amongst those who are abused by their partner; and sending flowers is an effort for the abuser to apologize to the victim.
Now, please do not think that your coworker who received flowers is being abused, it doesn't work like that.
Most abusers actually feel remorse for their behavior and send flowers to make up for the pain they have created. The problem is not the flowers, the problem is they do not have the skills to control their behavior(s) and often times are repeating their own familial patterns that they experienced. It is difficult to break the cycle.
They will send flowers in the most public way, for instance sending them to their place of work. This way the abuser will unwittingly get others on his side, as the coworkers tell her how great of a guy he is.
If you are in a relationship where the highs are higher and the lows are lower, and there has been any sign of violence YOU ARE IN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT MAY RESULT IN YOUR DEATH.
If you see flowers and a bruise or other strange marks on a friend or family member's body, this is a signal that there MAY be something wrong and dangerous with her situation.
Most abusers do not abuse in a premeditated way, they do so as a result of unable to deal with some sort of event- not necessary related to their partner's action.
While there are warning signs of agitation, stress, built up energy- many times there is not time to react to these signs and RUN. The one thing you cannot do is control another person's behavior and even trying can lead to consequences.◦

More to Love: Episode Four

Melissa and Lauren are sent home.
Wow are the producers/editors reading my blog?!?!? My techie is telling me there are a larger number of people from LA hitting the site. A larger part of my work is becoming consulting in the entertainment business so no biggie. I told him I didn't care and don't do the ip look up thingy...
Last week I made some big statements,
"They will be gone and they know it, Kristian and Danielle." I guess you can have a ring and still be gone, where was Kristian in this episode? Her minutes drastically cut!
and
"Where does Luke stand in all this? A big cardboard cutout could stand in for him." This week we see him emerge (slightly).
Onto the non verbals of this episode:
Good Wife/Bad Wife
Perhaps this clip will make it into some of my training materials. We have so much emotion. Role playing. Pacifying behavior. Subtle surprise. Truth. Head tilts. Shoulder shrugs. Eye movement. Non asymmetrical mouth positions. Sadness. Happiness and True smiles. Pursed lips. Eye direction clues. One shoulder shrug. Head tilts. Hand pointing. Social smiles. Nods. Anger. Face touching. Perverse pleasure at the expense of others pain. Watch and learn from this five minute clip showing more nonverbal and body language clues that I have ever seen in any reality TV show!
Greetings
Last week I mentioned, "Look at the greetings, it will be the best indication of the relationship. Excitement seen here is important."
Who wins?
Melissa's Greeting
Heather's Greeting
More Thoughts
Mandy clearly is showing much more emotion than she has this season. Luke is not an emotional guy, but I hear and see some things in this exchange that lead me to believe that Luke has a way to go:
- Luke does not show any emotion when she expresses 'calling a boyfriend' and shows non verbal clues that he is not planning on choosing her (sigh, mouth).
- Luke says, "It is going to get more difficult, not just for me, but for you" is a warning for her. Listen to the his voice. "not just for me" is said softer- it will not be as difficult for him as it will be for her.
