Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron reacts after playing cricket inside a stadium in New Delhi July 29, 2010. Cameron trumpeted a $1.1 billion defence deal with India on Wednesday, an early result of a big diplomatic push to court Indian business and tap new sources of economic growth.
After not doing so good the Prime Minister shows some shame, laughs at himself, and rubs his hand through his hair (to pacify himself). What is interesting about this gesture it is a guesture that our mothers and fathers do to us when we were little and is an enduring gesture, when we are older we do it to attempt to create the same sence of comfort that it once brought us.◦

Venus Williams Lets One Get Away

Venus Williams of the US reacts as she plays Samantha Stosur of Australia during their quarter final match for the French Open tennis tournament at Roland Garros in Paris, France, 02 June 2010.
Notice the head tilt (shying away from the opportunity); the lips piercing inward (even though she could say a great deal to herself); and the closed eyes (because she did not like what she just saw) all tell her true feeling about what has just occurred...◦

Shutting Eyes in Confrontation

Conservative and Labour supporters clash as they wave placards at the car carrying British Prime Minister Gordon Brown after talking to party supporters at a private residence on April 21, 2010 in Cardiff, United Kingdom. The General Election, to be held on May 6, 2010 is set to be one of the most closely fought political contests in recent times with all main party leaders embarking on a four week campaign to win the votes of the United Kingdom electorate.
Rest assured the photographer did not capture this person in a blink. She has purposely closed her eyes and moved her head backward subconsciously as a way to protect herself.
It is not often in today's world where we are tested and can know if we are "fight or flight" by nature. The person in the above photograph is in the flight mode; if she had been in the fight mode her eyes would have been open wide and she would be leaning towards the conflict instead of away.◦

Forward Head Tilt Means Sexy

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gives a speech on internet freedom at the Newseum on January 21, 2010 in Washington, DC. Five United States senators are publicly urging Clinton to move faster to support organizations that are helping people in countries with restrictive internet policies circumvent those policies.
This is unique. When we place our hand over our heart it usually is a way to show warmth, compassion, or caring feelings. What is unique is her showing this gesture, but her head is not directly facing the receiver of the message; See how her head is turned away.
We do not know the context so we cannot completely understand what this means, but if you see this with someone you are communicating with (and whenever you have two opposing gestures/expressions) it is a hot spot.◦

Showing Interest with a Head Tilt in Converstation

Spanish actress Paz Vega attends Goya cinema awards press conference at Academia de Cine on January 9, 2010 in Madrid, Spain.
When listening to another speak and we tilt our heads there are several different meanings depending on the context.
Here we see this actress tilt her head which is a sign of actively thinking about what is being said.
Other things that a tilt head could mean is thinking about a response, can mean the person is curious, or in certain cases is a sign of submissiveness.
We also see a modified gesture of the high confidence steeple:

Touching Another's Head
Philadelphia 76ers' Allen Iverson consoles teammate Andre Iguodala after missing a three-point shot against the Detroit Pistons at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Wednesday, December 9, 2009.
Our heads are one of the most protected areas of our body, and allowing another to touch you there is a sign of closeness or shared trust.
My grandmother used to show affection with a simple stoke of my hair as she passed by me when I was sitting at the dinner table.◦

Rihanna Breaks Her Silence
The singer tells ABC's Diane Sawyer she feels ashamed about falling for Chris Brown and says she left him as an example to other young women who might be in abusive relationships. (Nov. 5)
I have seen the full video, beyond what I show here, and here are my thoughts.
She is truly embarrassed (which she should not be) about the situation she currently is in and accepts some of the responsibility for being in love with a man who could hurt her- in this clip you can see this by the lack of eye contact with Diane. In the full interview she tends to look down and to her right, which is often where we look when we are accessing the emotional part of our brain. She likely still feels guilty for have some feelings for him. The slight downward tilting of her head could be an expression of shame.
As someone who analyzes violence in couples, the biggest predictor of future violence is previous violence and there is no "mold" for an abuser. Having seen people "take him back" this likely may have had a different outcome had it not been in the public eye. She is doing the right thing!
There is a hot spot where she shakes her head "no" when she is stating she didn't realize how much of an impact she has on these girl's lives- she always realized she was having an impact but now the impact could have consequences (instead of guiding their fashion choices) for their safety.
I had a past post with Chris Brown where he appeared on Larry King.◦

God Help Me
Jesus Mendez, age 15, appeared in juvenile court, Wednesday, October 14, 2009, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, at the Broward County Courthouse. Mendez was charged with aggravated battery and attempted second-degree murder for participating in setting a 15-year-old boy on fire. (Joe Cavaretta/Sun Sentinel/MCT) Photo via Newscom
Several Boys have been charged in this terrible crime... Having looked at each of the boys this particular boy was not the leader, but unfortunately went along with it.
This gesture is not well documented. There could be several reasons why we would look up- athletes often give thanks or recognition to God (or a family member that they believe is in heaven) when doing something well on the field of competition.
In this particular case, everything it out of his control, and he is stressed and perhaps looking for Divine intervention.◦

Looking Down His Nose
Oct 23 2009
Chairman of the EPAD agency and French Minister in charge of the government's economic recovery plan, Patrick Devedjian attends the Hauts-de-Seine general council in Nanterre, west of Paris, France on October 23, 2009 during the meeting for the election of a new member of the EPAD agency overseeing development in La Defense district, seeked by him. When a person lifts their head and tilts it backwards, they are conveying that they feel superior and people will perceive them as haughty. If it is combined with a thrust of their chin it is conveying they are ready for a fight. It is always interpreted as a negative gesture. Do one likes to see someone else look down their nose at others.◦

Charlie Davies Holds Hands on Top of His Head
Oct 10 2009
Charlie Davies. US Men's National Team vs Honduras at Estadio Olimpico in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Photo via Newscom
What we are seeing here is Charlie, with his hands on top of his head, has been done after something bad has happened, and his touch is pacifying in nature.
This is an anti gravity gesture that shows he has energy but has no way to effectively use that energy to achieve his goal.
It is interesting because in many ways this is an ironic in nature since it is so close to the high confidence gesture of placing the hands behind the head and the anti gravity component to the gesture.◦

Who Me?
ITAR-TASS 61: MOSCOW, RUSSIA. OCTOBER 9, 2009. Russian journalist human rights activist and editor-in-chief of Prima information agency Alexander Podrabinek speaks to the media at a news conference.
I do not know what this news conference was about, but what I see here is a man who is referencing himself with his hands, also notice how easily it would be for him to make his hands into fists- this is a sign he is willing to fight or be strong.
When you tilt your head down it could mean that you either are "bowing down" to someone more important, or shame, or deception as you subtly hide from your words. It is a negative way to hold your head.◦

Jude Law Gives an Eyebrow Flash

Oct 6 2009
Celebrities photographed after attending the Hamlet Broadway opening at the Broadhurst Theater in New York City. Pictured: Jude Law Picture by: Splash News
An eyebrow flash is something we normally do when we see someone that we know unconsciously.
When done consciously, as we see here, it is done to with a slight tilt or turning of the head, and with his chin out it is the same as saying, "Excuse me..." I did not hear what you are saying.◦
