Categories of Gestures: Regulators

Female office worker holding pile of paperwork, gesturing with hand
This type of gesture support the interaction and communication between two or more people. These include the movement of the head, neck, eyes, hand gestures, and posture.

They are most often used to help each other take control of the conversation, for example when a person is done talking they hold out their hands, palms up to invite the other to respond. There are also subtle ways to turn the conversation to another, such as ask a question and raise the eyebrows in anticipation of a response.

In the above example we see this young woman attempting to stop further conversation; and with her eyebrows it is clear if you push the issue it will be meet with anger or aggression.◦
